Peromyscus maniculatus, the deer mouse, is the most widely distributed rodent in North America. There are two subspecies of special concern in California: the Anacapa deer mouse (P. m. anacapae) and the San Clemente deer mouse (P. m. clementis).
why species was selected
The strength of studying this species is the opportunity to look at general trends of diversification across the entire state, but also to gather pertinent information about genomic variation in isolated populations of conservation concern, like island endemics.
