Helminthoglypta tudiculata (Southern California Shoulderband Snail)
about the species
The Southern California shoulderband snail is a largely California-endemic genus. This species and its congeners are threatened by habitat destruction and possibly increased fire activity and climate warming. Other included congeneric species are the Bronze shoulderband snail, Helminthoglypta arrosa, which spans from Eureka through coastal northern California to Monterey, the Big Sur shoulderband snail, H. umblicata, which has a range from Monterey Bay to Morro Bay, and the Morro shoulderband snail, H. walkeriana, with a 2,638 hectare (6,520 acre) range within and close to the cities of Morro Bay and Los Osos-Baywood Park.
why species was selected
All congeneric taxa that are part of this project are considered by NatureServe as Imperiled, however, little is known about the (genetics or) genomics of this genus.
