As the State Flower of California, the California poppy is a charismatic species and one that is widely recognized by the non-scientist public. It is abundant in many different habitat types, and hence could serve as an indicator species for habitat supporting native flora and fauna. It is also widespread, with a range encompassing the entire north-south latitudinal gradient of the state, meaning that the species has the plastic and/or genetic capacity to persist across wide environmental conditions. Past research has documented remarkable phenotypic variation across its range, including clinal variation in traits consistent with a history of past natural selection in response to climate (Cook 1962). It is also a popular species used in restoration, and hence many land managers seek guidance regarding the most appropriate locations for seed sources.
why species was selected
In this short-lived species, genomic variation across space is thus likely to reflect contemporary rates of gene flow, making it a potentially important species for identifying areas where generalist pollinators can (and can't) facilitate gene flow among populations separated by physical barriers.
