Black bears, which range in color from black to white, are widespread and occur in ecosystems across North America. As large omnivores, they play important ecological roles in the varied habitats they occupy. They are also viewed as an important resource for humans, including for recreational hunting. While the species faces habitat loss and fragmentation across much of the United States, most populations appear to be stable or increasing.
why species was selected
Black bears are a widespread species in California and are not currently of conservation concern. However, continued monitoring is critical to ensure that any problems are recognized early so that management plans can be modified to achieve an appropriate balance between the recreational value of black bears and the maintenance of viable populations.
