Penstemon newberryi var. sonomensis (Sonoma beardtongue)
about the species
Penstemon newberryi var. sonomensis (Sonoma beardtongue) is a woody perennial endemic to rocky outcrops in the Mayacamas range in Sonoma and Napa county. It is an important nectar source for hummingbirds and bumblebees and is a pollen source for a variety of native bees. Locally common, it is known from only five or six locations.
why species was selected
Penstemon newberryi var. sonomensis is a good candidate for CCGP because it is rare, and its range is shrinking. It is a key component of the montaine flora. Understanding the genomic diversity of this species will enable conservationists to identify regions of high priority for conservation, and to identify germplasm that can be used to restore habitat.
