Penstemon newberryi var. newberryi (mountain pride) is a woody perennial found on rocky outcrops throughout the montaine zone of the Sierra Nevada. It is an important nectar source for hummingbirds and bumblebees and is a pollen source for a variety of native bees. It spreads easily through vegetative propagation. It is a distinctive Sierra Nevada species (hence its common name).

Penstemon newberryi var. newberryi is a good candidate for CCGP because it is widespread and ecologically significant. It is a key component of the montaine flora, and its range will likely be shifting up in altitude as climate change increases. Understanding the genomic diversity of this species will enable conservationists to identify regions of high priority for conservation.
