Paralychthys californicus (California Halibut)
about the species
California halibut (Paralychthys caliifornicus) is one of the most important commercial and recreational fishes in Southern California with 500,000lbs in landings in 2018. It ranges from Baja California to Washington, inhabiting coastal waters and estuaries, and can grow to 30-40lbs. Juveniles are an important food source for shorebirds, while adults are preyed upon by local sharks, sea lions and dolphins.
why species was selected
This fishery has 50% decline since 2000, partially due to estuarine habitat loss. Its stock structure is unknown, but with a range that spans multiple biogeographic provinces, it could have multiple stocks that need to be managed separately.
