Melospiza melodia (Song Sparrow)
about the species
California song sparrows have extensive phenotypic diversity, which has long made this species a focus of ecological and evolutionary studies in the state. Nine subspecies breed in and inhabit all ecoregions in the state. Five of these subspecies are endemic to the state (graminea, maxillaris, pusillula, samuelis, gouldii) and all of these endemics, except gouldii, are recognized as California Bird Species of Special Concern. Controversy remains over the taxonomic status of some of the Bay Area subspecies that have adapted to living in salt marshes, which are challenging habitats to occupy.
why species was selected
With whole genome data in hand we will be able to resolve the taxonomic status of California taxa and investigate the genomic adaptations that have facilitated the Song Sparrow’s colonization of the harsh salt marsh habitat.
