The vernal pool tadpole shrimp is widely distributed throughout California’s Great Central Valley, with the greatest concentration of localities in the Sacramento region. The species inhabits large temporary ponds and co-occurs with many other sensitive vernal pool species.

The largest current threat to vernal pool tadpole shrimp is continued development in the Central Valley. Due to the concerns over habitat loss the vernal pool tadpole shrimp was listed as federally endangered in 1994.
