about the species

Layia pentachaeta (Sierra layia) is a California endemic that occurs widely in the Sierra Nevada foothills, South Coast Ranges, and San Joaquin Valley in sandy or clayey soils. Populations of these spring-flowering annuals can be white or yellow rayed and can form dense, showy stands in wet years.

why species was selected

Layia pentachaeta (Sierra layia) is the closest living relative of the Layia glandulosa species complex, so genomic data from this species will be important for comparison with genomic information from both L. glandulosa and L. discoidea.
