about the species
The Panamint kangaroo rat (D. panamintinus) occurs in upland shrub communities in the Mojave Desert, and margins of the Great Basin deserts of California and western Nevada. Both D. p. argusensis and D. p. panamintinus are considered vulnerable, but lack ESA or SSC status (CDFW 2020).

Like other kangaroo rats, this species is under threat due to loss of habitat. Genomic data will help illuminate the extent of any loss of genetic diversity.
