Dipodomys ingens (Giant Kangaroo Rat)
about the species
Dipodomys ingens, the largest species of kangaroo rats, is Endangered at state and federal levels, due to its reduction in distribution through habitat loss in the Central Valley. The species currently occupies only ~3% of its former distribution. Fortunately, some populations persist in protected areas such as the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Although populations of D. ingens are separated into northern and southern units 150 km apart, they are not reciprocally monophyletic (Statham et al. 2019).
why species was selected
This project will help determine how the remaining diversity is partitioned in remnant populations of this endangered species.
