Bombus vosnesenskii (Yellow-faced Bumble Bee)
about the species
Bombus vosnesenskii (the yellow faced bumble bee) is found throughout the west coast, from Baja to British Columbia, and is the most common bumble bee species in California. Although the species is not considered threatened, recent analyses suggest its range is shifting in California. Like all bumble bees, B. vosnesenskii is an important pollinator, and visits manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.), lupine (Lupinus spp.), and other native flowering plants of the west coast.
why species was selected
B. vosnesenskii is an ecologically important pollinator, and although it is very relatively abundant in California, it appears to be undergoing changes in range in the state.
