Bombus crotchii is an important pollinator in the western United States. The species has undergone considerable decline and is considered endangered by the IUCN, and was proposed for state listing in California. It is currently primarily restricted to coastal Southern California, with some isolated populations in the Central Valley and other parts of the state.
